Should I buy a stackable washer and dryer?

If you don’t have much free space or if you’re trying to make room for storage but still want the convenience of a tumble dryer, you might want to consider opting for a stackable washer and dryer. How do you know if your washer and dryer are stackable? Most standard size front-loading appliances (60cm depth) can be stacked using a stacking kit, however, be sure to check the product details to see if an appliance is stackable before you buy.

How to stack a washer and dryer?

The most important thing to know is that the dryer must always go on top of the washer, not the other way around. Before you begin stacking, measure your appliances and confirm that your installation area is big enough. Be sure to leave an extra 5cm – 8cm on either side for ventilation and cables.

Choose compatible appliances

The safest and simplest way to be sure your washer and dryer will stack easily is to buy a set from the same brand. Their compatible dimensions and matching design will ensure that both appliances will not only fit perfectly together but also look great as one unit. And, you won’t risk compromising their warranties. Using a stackable washer and dryer set is also more intuitive since their operating system and user experience is the same. Additionally, Wi-Fi-enabled models, such as the Siemens washer and dryer, offer a number of advanced features and functions when connected to each other.

Is a stacking kit necessary for washer and dryer?

It’s always a good idea to use a stacking kit (spacer), even if your washer and dryer have the same dimensions. These intermediate pieces distribute the weight of your dryer evenly and absorb vibrations, allowing both machines to run simultaneously without any problems. Some even include a pull-out drawer that serves as a convenient workspace when transferring laundry.

Level the washing machine

It is always important to level your machine but even more so when you are stacking appliances. Excessive rattling can be noisy and damage both machines. To level your washer, start by using a spirit level to see which way it is leaning. Place it on top, side to side and front to back. Next, adjust the washer legs until all four are touching the floor.

Remember the anti-slip strips

Now that your washing machine is perfectly level, you can place the spacer on top. Before you do, turn the spacer upside down and attach an anti-slip strip to each corner. This will help protect your washer.

Use a fastening strap (optional)

For added peace of mind, you can also reinforce your appliance stack with a fastening strap. To do this, unroll the strap and insert one end through the right-side slot in your spacer, from the top, with the belt leveller facing outwards.

Run it under the machine and up through the left slot on the spacer. Place your dryer on top, run the belt over it and through the belt tensioner, and tighten the strap.

An alternative option

While stacking your washer and dryer saves a lot of floor space, it does require more height clearance. If you don’t have sufficient space for stacking or you just want to spend a little less, there is an alternative option—a washer-dryer combination appliance.

Yes, tumble dryers typically weigh between 45 and 60 kg, depending on the size and model. It takes at least two people to lift a tumble dryer safely.
